Major John "Bang" Baker graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University in December 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. In June of 2009, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to attend The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, in March 2010.
After completing The Basic School, he was assigned to Aviation Plans and Policies at HQMC for a brief period. Maj Baker began flight school in June of 2011 at Aviation Preflight Indoctrination in Pensacola, Florida, with follow-on training at NAS Corpus Christi for Primary Flight training. In February of 2012, he was selected for jet training and began Intermediate/Advanced Flight Training at NAS Kingsville, Texas. In July 2013, he was winged as a Naval Aviator and he reported to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203, Cherry Point, North Carolina, for training in the AV-8B Harrier.
After completion of the Fleet Replacement Squadron, In October 2014, Capt Baker executed orders to MAG-13 in Yuma, Arizona, and was assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 214. In February of 2016, he deployed on the USS Boxer with the 13th MEU. While deployed Major Baker flew combat operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve and participated in numerous exercises ranging from South Korea to Malaysia.
In June of 2018, Capt Baker received orders to Training Wing One in Meridian, Mississippi. While at TW-1 Major Baker served as the Safety Department Head and flew in support of Student Naval Aviator production for the US Navy, Marine Corps, and partner nations.
In May of 2021, Major Baker reported to Marine Attack Squadron 542. He executed duties as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer for nearly a year. Throughout his time at the Tigers he completed the work up period for their upcoming MEU deployment and subsequent shutdown in preparation for re-designation to VMFA-542.
Major Baker’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/gold star), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
