SgtMaj McClary is a native of North Carolina. He enlisted into the Marine Corps in September 1997 and attended recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC in July 1998. There he graduated as the Company Honor Graduate and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Upon graduation from recruit training, he attended School of Infantry (SOI), Camp Geiger, NC for Marine Combat Training (MCT) followed by Basic Combat Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, NC.

Cpl McClary then reported to his first duty station with 2d Combat Engineer Battalion (CEB) in Camp Lejeune, NC from March 1999 to January 2001, where he served as a squad leader with Charlie Company.  There he was also promoted to the rank of Sergeant and deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), in support of Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1st Battalion 8th Marines, conducting peace keeping operations in Kosovo.  In June 2001 he was then assigned Engineer Training Area (ETA) 3, where he served as an instructor and chief instructor.

In August 2002, Sgt McClary received orders reporting to Recruiter’s School, San Diego, CA as a student. Upon graduation, he received orders to Marine Corps Recruiting Station Raleigh, NC.  From October 2002 to October 2005, Sgt McClary was permanently assigned to Recruiting Sub-Station (RSS) Hickory where he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon his successful tour on Recruiting Duty, SSgt McClary received orders to 9th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB), Okinawa, Japan where he served from October 2005 to May 2009. His first assignment was with Alpha Company serving in billet of Platoon Guide.  In 2006 he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (SNCOIC) of the Route Reconnaissance and Clearance (R2C) platoon in Al Anbar Province.  Upon his in October 2006, SSgt McClary assumed the role of Company Gunnery Sergeant of Alpha Company.  In March 2007, SSgt McClary attached his company to Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB) 4 and deployed in August 2007 as Engineer Chief, Engineer Company, CLB-4 under 2d Marine Logistics Group (MLG) Forward in support of OIF 6-8.2.  Returning to Okinawa in March 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and assumed the responsibility of Engineer Operations Chief, S-3, 9th ESB.

In May of 2009, GySgt McClary was ordered to report to Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, NC.  During his tour here, GySgt McClary served as a Demolitions Range Instructor and Explosive Hazards Section Leader.  In April 2011 he was transferred to the Engineer Center of Excellence to be the “spokesperson” of the Marine Corps for all R2C operations.

GySgt McClary received orders back to 2d CEB, Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was assigned to Engineer Support Company from April 2012 to July 2013.  GySgt McClary deployed with the battalion to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 12.2 and 13.1 where he served in the billets of Company Gunnery Sergeant and Executive Officer.  He was selected to the rank of 1stSgt in December 2012.

1stSgt McClary reported to Okinawa, Japan for duty in July 2013 to serve as the Headquarters Company First Sergeant for 4th Marine Regiment.  He then reported to 3d Transportation Support Battalion in April 2015 where he served as the Motor Transport Company First Sergeant.  While there, he was selected to deploy with Combat Logistics Detachment 391 to Korea in support of SSANG YONG and FREEDOM BANNER 2016.

In May 2016, 1stSgt McClary reported to 8th Communication Battalion in Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as the Headquarters Company First Sergeant until August 2016.  He then held the billet of Battalion Sergeant Major until February 2017 when he began to serve as the Service Company First Sergeant.  He was selected to the rank of SgtMaj in November 2017 and reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC in January to serve as the Squadron SgtMaj.  In October of 2018 he deployed as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) SgtMaj in support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Africa (SPMAGTF-CR-AF) 19.1. In December 2019, he was reassigned to Maine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 at Cherry Point, NC.

SgtMaj McClary’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 stars in lieu of 3rd award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 stars in lieu of 4th award, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal with a silver and bronze star in lieu of 7th award, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and various unit awards.
