Staff Sergeant Jason L. Russell enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2007 and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, SC. After graduation from the Basic Musician Course at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA, SSgt Russel reported to the Marine Forces Reserve Band, New Orleans, LA. There he served as a Trumpet Instrumentalist and a Supply Clerk.
In June of 2012, SSgt Russell reported to the Parris Island Marine Band, Parris Island, SC. There he served as a Trumpet Instrumentalist, Supply Clerk, Transportation Chief, Sergeant of the Guard, Range Safety Officer, Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Guide, and Platoon Sergeant.
In July of 2017, SSgt Russell reported to the 2nd Marine Division Band, Camp Lejeune, NC. There he served as a Trumpet Instrumentalist, Trumpet Section Leader, Supply Chief, Training Chief, Brass Quintet Unit Leader, Assistant Small Ensemble Leader, and Small Ensemble Leader.
In January of 2020, SSgt Russell again reported to the Naval School of Music as a student in the Unit Leader Course. Upon graduation, SSgt Russell reported for duty with the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing Band, Cherry Point, NC. Here, he has served as the Assistant Small Ensemble Leader and is currently serving as the Drum Major.
SSgt Russell's military decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
