MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

MWCS-28 award first Spartan Cup
Lieutenant Col. Jamie Macias leads Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 on a motivational run as the culminating event for the inaugural Spartan Cup at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., June 19, 2014. The Spartan Cup is designed to inspire competiveness within the squadron, build esprit de corps and achieve balanced excellence. At the conclusion of the run, Macias announced Company B is the first to receive the Spartan Cup. Macias is the commanding officer of MWCS-28. The squadron plans to continue this ongoing competition crowning a winner semi-annually.
