MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

MWCS-28 awards first Spartan Cup
Sergeant Maj. Jason Green leads Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 during cool down exercises after a motivational run at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., June 19, 2014. The motivational run was the culminating event for squadron's inaugural Spartan Cup. The three companies of MWCS-28 competed in Spartan Cup, which helped the squadron achieve balanced excellence. The squadron plans to continue this ongoing competition crowning a winner semi-annually. Company B earned a place in the squadron's history as the first company to earn the Spartan Cup. Green is the squadron's sergeant major.
