MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Cherry Point DEERS, RAPIDS recognized with 2nd Site Excellence Award
Jackie M. Cherry Point’s DEERS and RAPIDS office recently received the Marine Corps Personnel and Readiness Site Excellence Award from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense Sept. 17 for unwavering dedication to duty and outstanding performance by a team of Marine and civilian Department of Defense employees. Butler is a human resource assistant and has worked with the office for more than eight years.
