MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Leaders gather at air station, discuss future of naval aviation
Gunnery Sgt. Ronald Strzalkowski briefs senior leaders from the naval aviation community on improvements that can be made to the maintenance training of CH-53E Super Stallions during a “Boots on the Ground” event at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., Sept. 17, 2015.
