MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Marines assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 274, Marine Aircraft Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, enjoy a warrior’s meal aboard Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, N.C., March 16, 2017. MWSS-274 senior leadership hosted the warrior meal with the United Services Organization to allow the Marines to relax before heading home as a gesture of appreciation. MWSS-274 established an air facility aboard MCALF Bogue capable of providing all airfield and air base support functions to MAG 29 squadrons with a forward arming and refueling point at Atlantic.
