MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

MACG-28 hosts first athletic combine
Marines prepare for the stinger missile race during a combine hosted by Marine Air Control Group 28 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., June 2, 2017. During the race, two people from each team ran with a stinger missile for one mile. While running, the Marines were able to pass the missile back and forth to their partner.
