MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Abramovs was awarded the Air Medal for heroism while training at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows, O’ahu, Hawai’i, on May 17, 2015. While conducting MV-22 Osprey training exercises, an aircraft conducted a hard landing at the training area, May 17, 2015. Although wounded during the hard landing, Abramovs returned to the downed aircraft multiple times in order to evacuate and aid his fellow Marines. Glavy is the commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and Abramovs is an AV-8B Harrier II pilot with Marine Attack Squadron 231, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd MAW.
