MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

MWSS-271 detects IEDs at Lejeune
A convoy of Marines assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 travel to a rally point during counter improvised explosive device training at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 3, 2017. Nearly 30 Marines in MWSS-271’s motor transport section completed the weeklong C-IED course, and learned how to successfully apply the lessons learned by navigating a course training area filled with hidden notional IED’s.
