MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Marines learn new skills at Bell
Clint Christie demonstrates a grinding technique to U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Nathan Peterson during a hole drilling and faster installation course at Bell’s Assembly Center at Amarillo, Texas, Nov. 26, 2018. The course is designed to teach the Marines faster and more efficient ways to drill close tolerance holes and install appropriate fasteners in the MV-22B Osprey. Peterson is a tiltrotor airframe mechanic assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 264. VMM-264 is assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.
