MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

CH-53K King Stallion helicopter transports infantry Marines
U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, board a CH-53K King Stallion assigned to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron (VMX) 1 at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, North Carolina, Oct. 20, 2021. The CH-53K King Stallion will replace the CH-53E Super Stallion, which has served the Marine Corps for 40 years, and will transport Marines, heavy equipment, and supplies during ship-to-shore movement in support of amphibious assault and subsequent operations ashore.
