MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

Three MV-22B Ospreys Launch
U.S. Marines assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 365 conduct a three MV-22B Osprey launch at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, Sept. 19, 2022. VMM-365 demonstrated the readiness they provide to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force by ensuring their MV-22B Ospreys are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
