MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT

May 20, 1942

On May 20, 1942, the facility was commissioned Cunningham Field, named in honor of the Marine Corps' first aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham. The completed facility was later renamed Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, after a local post office situated among cherry trees.

2nd LAAD SMASH 2000L fire control system live-fire training
U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Thomas Eaton, from Kentucky, a gunner with 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, shoots at moving targets using the SMASH 2000L fire control system at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Dec. 16, 2025. The SMASH 2000L system uses computer vision and machine learning technology and can be mounted to small arms weapons to target unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
