Sergeant Major Thomas R. Smith

SgtMaj Smith enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July, 1998 and graduated from 2nd Recruit Battalion, Parris Island, SC in October 1998. Then reported to Marine Combat Training (East), at Camp Geiger, NC.

From November 1998 to March 1999, Private Smith completed his MOS school as a Logistic Vehicle System Operator (3533). From March 1999 to July 2002, Private First Class Smith was assigned to Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF), Camp Lejeune, NC reaching the ranks of Lance Corporal and Corporal; also, holding the billets of Dispatcher and Training NCO.
 
Corporal Smith was honorably discharged in July 2002 only to reenlist and return to active duty in February 2003 as a Tubular-Launched Optically Wire-Guided Missileman (TOW Gunner 0352). At which time he was stationed with 2d Battalion 3d Marines in Kaneohe Bay, HI and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Smith deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, in November 2003 as a TOW section leader and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in June 2005 as a Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT) Convoy Commander. 

In October 2007, Sgt Smith reported to 3d Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (3d FAST) Camp Allen, VA where he attained the MOS of (8154) and promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Deploying to Manama, Bahrain in June 2008, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in September 2009 and again to Manama, Bahrain in April 2010, all in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Platoon Sergeant.
 
In February 2011, Staff Sergeant Smith reported to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines in Camp Pendleton, CA. During this time, he served as the Platoon Sergeant for Weapons Company CAAT and Kilo Company. In December 2011, Staff Sergeant Smith deployed on the 11th MEU. Upon return he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in September 2013.

In September 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Smith reported to Marine Security Guard School, Quantico, VA. Upon completion of Detachment Commander's Course, he attained the MOS of (8156) and became a Detachment Commander for U.S. Consulate Cape Town, South Africa. After South Africa, Gunnery Sergeant Smith was selected as an Instructor/Advisor at the Marines Corps Embassy Security Guard School. 

In July 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Smith reported to Marine Corps Training Mission in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a Foreign Advisor, gaining the MOS 0f (0571), to the UAE Presidential Guard and was selected to his current rank of First Sergeant. 

In May 2018, 1stSgt Smith reported to 3d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment, Little Rock, AR where he served as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant. In July 2021, 1stSgt Smith received orders and reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, Cherry Point, NC where he served as Headquarters Company First Sergeant. In August 2022, 1stSgt Smith assumed his current position as the Squadron Sergeant Major for VMU-2 in Cherry Point, NC.
