LtCol John P. Skogman enlisted in the Marine Corps in May of 2006 from Dubuque, IA. He attended recruit training aboard MCRD San Diego as a Private between his Sophomore and Junior years of college. He reported to E Co, 2D BN, 24th Marines for service as a Rifleman in the Marine Corps Reserve Forces.
LtCol Skogman was accepted into the Platoon Leaders Class Officer transition program and attended Officer Candidates School in the Summer of 2007, after his junior year of college. He graduated college in 2008 from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He then accepted his commission as a Second Lieutenant in June of 2008.
From 2008-2011, LtCol Skogman completed TBS, Introductory Flight Screening, Primary Flight School, Intermediate Flight School, Advanced Flight school, and the MV-22 Fleet Replacement Squadron training from in preparation for his assignment as an MV-22B Pilot.
LtCol Skogman received orders to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (VMM-263) and reported into the squadron in January of 2012, he worked in Operations for two years before deploying with the 22 Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and becoming the S-4 for the LPD detachment. Upon completion of the 22 MEU, he attended Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) Course and served as the ASO and NATOPS Instructor for the remainder of his time in the squadron. He deployed in support of SP-MAGTF-CR-AF 16.1 then detached for career level school in Quantico, VA.
LtCol Skogman checked in to Expeditionary Warfare School in July of 2016 and remained in school until May of 2017. He remained in Quantico, VA to serve as a Platoon Commander at Officer Candidates School for the summer of 2017 with Delta Company, 3rd Platoon, before moving back to Jacksonville, NC for service at Marine Medium tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 (VMMT-204) as MV-22B Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot.
LtCol Skogman served at VMMT-204 from September 2017 to May of 2019 as the Ground Safety Officer, Director of Safety and Standardization, Aviation Safety Officer, and NATOPS Evaluator. During his time at VMMT-204 he revised the MV-22B Maneuver Description Guide, MV-22B NATOPS, VMMT-204 Performance Review Board Order, and VMMT-204 flight operations standard operating procedures. He volunteered for early transition back to the Fleet Marine Forces for service as Aviation Maintenance Officer at VMM-263.
LtCol Skogman returned to VMM-263 in May of 2019 to serve as Aviation Maintenance Officer. He served as Aviation Maintenance Officer for one CNAF inspection and one Integrated Training Exercise before he deployed in support of SP-MAGTF-CR-AF 20.2. While deployed, LtCol Skogman then transitioned to Operations Officer and continued to serve in that roll until his departure from VMM-263 in June 2021. He served as Operations Officer during the deployment, it’s retrograde, Commanding General's Inspection, and MCCRE Certification for the squadron's 2022 deployment with the 22 MEU.
LtCol Skogman reported into Headquarters Marine Corps, Department of Aviation in June of 2021 to assume the roles and responsibilities of ACP-52 within the Aircrew Programs shop. His primary responsibilities are the management of the Personnel Exchange Program, Interservice Exchange Program, and the coordination, preparation, and execution of Flight Status Selection Boards.
LtCol Skogman departed the Department of Aviation in June of 2025, when he reported to MAG-26 for refresher training in the MV-22B. Then, in September 2025, LtCol Skogman assumed the duties of Commanding Officer, VMM-266.
LtCol Skogman has a bachelor's of arts degree with concentrations in Finance and Economics. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, National Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3).
