Command Biography
HMH-461 Executive Officer
Major Dale E. Metcalf

A native of Sanford Maine, Major Metcalf entered the civilian work force after high school working four years prior to enlisting into the United States Marine Corps Reserve (USMCR). While in the USMCR, Major Metcalf was an Armorer for 1st Battalion 25th Marines, worked at Pratt & Whitney as a Tungsten Inert Gas Welder, and received a Bachelor of Science for Applied Technical Leadership at the University of Southern Maine. 

Major Metcalf was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in May of 2009.  He completed The Basic School in July of 2011, then completed Flight School and was winged as a Naval Aviator in September of 2013. Upon completion, he was selected as a CH-53E pilot and was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron (HMT) 302 for follow on CH-53E flight training.

Major Metcalf joined his first fleet squadron, the Heavy Haulers of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 462, in April of 2014. While at HMH-462, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan in 2015 and 2017 in support of the Unit Deployment Program. While at HMH-462, Major Metcalf served as a Schedule Writer, Ground Safety Officer, and the Logistics Officer. 

Major Metcalf received orders to HMHT-302 in September of 2018 to be a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor. He held the billet of Airframes and Ordnance division OIC. He then moved to the billet of Quality Assurance Officer and became Qualified as the Functional Check Flight Evaluator for the HMH community. 

In July 2021, Major Metcalf joined HMH-461, MAG-29, at MCAS New River, North Carolina, where he served as Aircraft Maintenance Officer during the CH-53E to CH-53K transition and is currently serving as the Executive Officer.

Major Metcalf’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, Navy and the Marine Corps Achievement Medal.  As a Naval Aviator he has compiled more than 1,500 mishap free flight hours in CH-53E and CH-53K helicopters.
