HMH-464 Command Senior Enlisted Leader
Sergeant Major Matthew L. Forsstrom

Sergeant Major Matt Forsstrom hails from Monroe, New York. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in October of 2003 and reported to recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC. Upon graduating from recruit training, Private First Class Forsstrom reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, NC, and then to Naval Aircrew Candidate School (NACCS) in Pensacola, Florida for water survival training. Following NACCS, he attended SERE School in Brunswick, Maine. Private First Class Forsstrom then reported to the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT), followed by training at Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302, where he attained the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 6173, CH-53E Super Stallion Crew Chief.

Upon graduation of MOS school, Lance Corporal Forsstrom received orders to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 466, in Miramar, CA. From November 2005 to April 2006, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was promoted to Corporal in August of 2006. From April 2007 to November 2007, he again deployed with HMH-466 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was promoted to Sergeant in July of 2007. During this time Sergeant Forsstrom held a number of instructor qualifications and collateral billets within the Flight Line division.

In January of 2008, Sergeant Forsstrom executed orders to HMHT-302 at MCAS New River, NC, for duty as a Crew Chief Instructor, serving as the primary instructor for over a dozen classes in a variety of instructor roles. In May 2010, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In January of 2011, Staff Sergeant Forsstrom received orders to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 aboard Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. From August 2011 to March 2012, the Squadron deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During his time with HMH-363, Staff Sergeant Forsstrom served as the Flightline SNCOIC, as well as in multiple Crew Chief Instructor roles.

In October of 2013, Staff Sergeant Forsstrom reported to Combat Instructor School, School of Infantry West. Upon graduating, he was assigned to Golf Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion, as a Combat Instructor. At Golf Company, he served as a Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Commander. Staff Sergeant Forsstrom was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in October of 2015 and transferred to India Company, where he served as Company Gunnery Sergeant.

In January of 2017, Gunnery Sergeant Forsstrom received orders to HMH-463 in Kaneohe Bay, HI, where he served as the Flightline Division Chief and Quality Assurance Rep, as well as the SNCOIC for a 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit detachment to Okinawa, Japan. In May of 2019, He was frocked to First Sergeant, and reported to Detachment 3, Maintenance Company in Vienna OH for duty as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant. After completing his tour on Inspector-Instructor Duty in May of 2022, First Sergeant Forsstrom received orders to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, where he served as the Easy Company First Sergeant. In February of 2023, Sergeant Major Forsstrom was frocked to his present rank and transfered to his current assignment, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, MAG-29, 2d MAW on Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Sergeant Major Forsstrom's personal awards include the Air Medal with Strike Flight numeral 10, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award. He is authorized to wear Combat Aircrew Wings with three silver stars.
