HMLA-167 Command Senior Enlisted Leader
Sergeant Major Alexander J. Bruffy

Sergeant Major Alexander Bruffy is a native of Ohio. He was raised in Kennedale, Texas and then enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005. He graduated Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Private Bruffy reported to Marine Combat Training on Camp Pendleton, California. Upon Completion, he transferred to Air Traffic Control School at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida and earned the MOS 7251. In January 2006, Private First Class Bruffy received orders to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California and earned qualifications on clearance delivery and Radar Final Control for the MOS of 7257.

In April 2006, Lance Corporal Bruffy was designated as a Radar Watch Supervisor. In September of 2006, he was promoted meritoriously to the rank of Corporal and began training in the Air Traffic Control Tower. In February 2010, Sergeant Bruffy completed his tour at MCAS Miramar as a Certified Tower Operator and earned the additional MOS of 7252. In addition, Sergeant Bruffy participated in funeral details and was the air traffic control facility’s primary Martial Arts Instructor.

In March 2010, Sergeant Bruffy reported to Marine Air Traffic Control Detachment (MATCD) Alpha, Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Beaufort, South Carolina and assisted Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort’s Air Traffic Control Facility. While at the ATC Facility he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and qualified as an Arrival/Approach controller and earned the additional MOSs of 7253 and 7254. In May of 2011 Staff Sergeant Bruffy deployed with MATCD Bravo, Marine Air Control Squadron 2 (FWD) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff Sergeant Bruffy served as a Watch Commander at Camp Dwyer and a Marine Mobile Air Traffic Control Team (MMT) leader at Combat Outpost Oullette, Afghanistan.

In October 2012, Staff Sergeant Bruffy attended Marine Mobile Air Traffic Control Team, Instructor Course at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona. In December 2012, Staff Sergeant Bruffy reported back to the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort ATC Facility and served as a Certified Tower Operator until January 2013. Staff Sergeant Bruffy then deployed with Marine Air Control Squadron Detachment, Marine Air Control Group 28 (FWD) to Forward Operating Base Payne, Afghanistan as an MMT Leader. Staff Sergeant Bruffy finished his tour with MACS-2 as MATCD Alpha’s Operations Chief.

In January 2014 Staff Sergeant Bruffy reported to Recruiter School as a student. In February, Staff Sergeant Bruffy reported to RS Fort Worth, 8MC District, Texas. Staff Sergeant Bruffy served as a canvassing recruiter at Recruiting Sub Station (RSS) Mansfield and was the FY15 Recruiter of the year. In November 2014 he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Gunnery Sergeant Bruffy completed his tour as the SNCOIC of RSS Mansfield.

In March 2017 Gunnery Sergeant Bruffy reported to MCAS Miramar where he served in the billets of Crew Chief, Facility Watch Officer, Radar Chief, and Training Chief. In March of 2018 he was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. In November 2019, First Sergeant Bruffy deployed in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit on the USS GREEN BAY, and the USS GERMANTOWN. In July 2020, First Sergeant Bruffy internally moved to Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines to assume the duties as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader. In October 2020, he was billeted as the Remain Behind Element (RBE) Command Senior Enlisted Leader for 1st Battalion, 5th Marines during the Battalion minus JTF-N Southwest Border Mission.

In April 2021, First Sergeant Bruffy was transferred to Company L, Headquarters and Support Battalion, School of Infantry – East, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to assume the billet Unit Senior Enlisted Leader, responsible for the graduation holding, medical rehabilitation, and administrative separations of entry-level Marines. In May of 2022, First Sergeant Bruffy assumed the duties of Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Advanced Infantry Training Company, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry – East. In March 2023 he was frocked to his current rank of Sergeant Major and transferred to his current assignment as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for HMLA-167, MAG 29, 2d MAW on MCAS New River, NC.

His personal decoration are as follows: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Sergeant Major Bruffy has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management, from The University of Arizona Global Campus.
