VMFA-312 Command Senior Enlisted Leader
Sergeant Major Steven D. Procter

Sergeant Major Steven Procter was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps May 10, 2007.  Upon completion of training at Marine Recruit Depot Parris Island, School of Infantry - East, and Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi he reported for duty to HMT-302, 2d MAW.  While stationed aboard MCAS New River, he served as a Logs and Records Clerk for the CH-53E platform.  Private First Class Procter was meritoriously promoted to the ranks of lance corporal, corporal, and sergeant.

In September of 2009, he was assigned to serve as the Logs and Records NCO for VMM-162 (REIN), 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.  He deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in July 2010 aboard the USS NASSAU.  He was directly responsible for over (22) aircraft and directly supported Humanitarian Operations in Haiti.  During this deployment he was assigned to serve as the detachment Maintenance Data SNCOIC conducting operations in Djibouti, Africa and Aqaba, Jordan.  Shortly after returning with the 24th MEU he subsequently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.  He was assigned to serve as the Logs and Records NCOIC for VMM-162.

In October of 2012, Sergeant Procter reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina for Drill Instructor duty.  He was assigned to Company A, 1st Recruit Training Battalion where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.  He was awarded the 2013 Drill Instructor of the Year for 1st Recruit Training Battalion and the 2014 Marine of the Year for the Exchange Club of Charleston.  In May 2014, Sergeant Procter was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and reported to 1st Recruit Training Battalion where he served as the Battalion Drill Master.

In November of 2015, Staff Sergeant Procter reported to HMLA-269 where he served as the Maintenance Data Division Chief supporting the Fleet Marine Force, 22nd, 24th and 31st Marine Expeditionary Units, and multiple Integrated Training and Weapons and Tactics Instructor exercises. In January of 2018, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and selected to serve as the 2d MAW ALMAT ALD Maintenance Data Inspector.  He inspected all 2d MAW aviation units to ensure they follow all orders and directives from the Commander of Naval Air Forces.

In October of 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Procter reported to Company B, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego where he served as Company First Sergeant and Chief Drill Instructor.  He completed his tour serving as the Recruit Training Regiment Scheduling Chief before reporting to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 165 in November of 2020 where he served as the Aviation Maintenance Data Division Chief/System Administrator.  He deployed in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS ESSEX conducting operations in the fifth and seventh fleet AOR.

In May of 2022, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to 1st Marine Raider Support Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served as the Company First Sergeant for Logistics Company and supported the training, manning, and equipping of Marine Raider Support Teams 1A and 1K. In September of 2022, he received orders to Marine Special Operations Company H, 2d Marine Raider Battalion. He deployed from January to July 2024 supporting combat operations under the Special Operations Task Force – Levant in support of operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

In June of 2025, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to VMFA-312, MAG-31, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina were he currently serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Sergeant Major Procter's personal awards include: the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Gold Star in lieu of the Fourth Award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of the Third Award), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (Bronze).  He graduated with distinction from Grantham University with a Master of Science degree in Information Technology.
