HMH-464 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Justin R. Carrell

LtCol Carrell is a native of Mobile, AL. He attended Mississippi State University, graduating in 2005. He completed Officer Candidates School in 2004 via the PLC program and received his commission as a 2ndLt upon college graduation. LtCol Carrell reported to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia in November 2005 for Introductory Flight Syllabus and The Basic School (TBS); he graduated TBS Bravo Company in July 2006. After completing TBS, LtCol Carrell reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and subsequently to Training Squadron Six and Helicopter Training Squadron 28 for flight training.

Designated a Naval Aviator in October 2008, he received orders to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302, Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC and attended the Fleet Replacement Squadron for the CH-53E.​ Upon completion of FRS training in June 2009, LtCol Carrell was transferred to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC where he trained for 6 months before deploying to Camp Bastion, Helmand, Afghanistan with HMH-466.  LtCol Carrell spent this deployment as a schedule writer and was designated a Helicopter Aircraft Commander on deployment.​

Upon return from deployment with HMH-466, LtCol Carrell returned to HMH-464, MCAS New River where in February 2011, he was designated a Night Systems Instructor.  In June 2011, LtCol Carrell deployed to Camp Bastion, Helmand, Afghanistan with HMH-464.  While on deployment, LtCol Carrell served as the Assistant Operations Officer (AOPSO).  Following this deployment, LtCol Carrell was nominated to attend WTI 2-11 and upon completion, he was designated a Weapons and Tactics Instructor and Defensive Measures Instructor.​

LtCol Carrell returned to HMH-464 in May 2012 and served as the Pilot Training Officer until June 2013.  Following this billet, LtCol Carrell was selected for assignment to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1).  In July 2013, LtCol Carrell reported to MAWTS-1, Yuma, AZ where he served as a CH-53E Instructor Pilot from July 2013 to June 2016.​

In July 2016, LtCol Carrell reported as a student to the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) and graduated in June 2017. While a student at CGSC, he attended and graduated from the University of Kansas with a Master of Arts degree. LtCol Carrell reported to HMH-461 in July 2017, where he served as AOPSO until March 2018 when he assumed the role of Aviation Maintenance Officer (AMO). He remained in this billet until January 2019 when he reported to VMM-365 on TAD orders to assume the duties of Executive Officer.  He served as Executive Officer until August 2019 when he assumed the Operations Officer billet for VMM-365(REIN) while also serving as HMH detachment OIC.  LtCol Carrell remained in this billet through pre-deployment training and deployment with the 26th MEU returning to HMH-461 in August 2020.​

Upon returning from deployment, he was reassigned to HQMC DC Aviation, where he served as an Aviation Budget Analyst from August 2020 to July 2021. From July 2021 to August 2023, LtCol Carrell served as the Aviation Program Development Officer, Headquarters Marine Corps, Programs and Resources, Pentagon. He was then TEMINS as a student from September through December 2023. LtCol Carrell assumed command of HMH-464 in February 2024.
