Command Biography
VMUT-2 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan L. Boersma

Lieutenant Colonel Boersma is a native of Homewood, IL.  He completed Officer Candidate School (OCS) in the summer of 2006.  He commissioned in the Marine Corps in May 2007, and completed The Basic School (TBS) in the spring of 2008.

Second Lieutenant Boersma attended Naval Flight Officer (NFO) training at NAS Pensacola, FL, and received his wings in March 2010.  He trained as an EA-6B Prowler Electronic Countermeasures Officer (ECMO) at NAS Whidbey Island, WA, and received the 7588 EA-6B ECMO designation in April 2011.  He was then assigned to VMAQ-2, MCAS Cherry Point, NC.  Captain Boersma served in multiple billets while attached to VMAQ-2 and participated a combat deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) (March to October 2012), along with two deployments to Iwakuni, Japan (August 2013 to February 2014 and again in January 2015 to July 2015).

In 2015 Captain Boersma transitioned to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and joined VMU-2, MCAS Cherry Point, NC.  He served in multiple billets while attached to VMU-2 including the Director of Safety and Standardization.  He also served as a Detachment Officer in Charge, VMU-2 Detachment to 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Special Operations Task Force-North; deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) from January to April 2017. 

In 2017 Major Boersma moved to Okinawa, Japan and joined III MEF, serving as the G-37 Northeast Asia Desk Officer for three years; working with the Japanese Self Defense Force and Government of Japan on multiple engagements.

In 2020 Major Boersma joined VMU-3 aboard MCAS Kaneohe Bay as the Operations Officer.  Additionally, he served as the Squadron Executive Officer and Advanced Tactics Division Department Head.  While with VMU-3, he also attended MQ-9A Initial Qualification Training at Holloman AFB, NM, graduating in May, 2022

Lieutenant Colonel Boersma joined MARFORPAC in July of 2023 as the Fixed Wing Air Officer.  He received his bachelors in psychology from San Diego State University in 2007.  

His personal awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Strike/Flight Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (1 Gold Star), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (1 Gold Star).
