Lieutenant Colonel Matthew P. Bagley earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University. He was commissioned through the Officer Candidate Course commissioning program in March of 2007. After completing The Basic School and Naval Flight Training, he reported to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302 for initial training in the CH-53E. Following designation as a CH-53E Helicopter Second Pilot, First Lieutenant Bagley was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366.
In January 2011, First Lieutenant Bagley joined Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (REIN) as the Aviation Combat Element of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. As part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, he deployed aboard the USS Bataan and USS Mesa Verde in support of Operations Unified Protector and Operation Odyssey Guard.
In April 2012, Captain Bagley returned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 before reporting to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 (REIN) in September 2012 as the Aviation Combat Element of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. While with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, he deployed aboard the USS San Antonio.
In November 2013, Captain Bagley returned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366, deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 14.2, where the squadron supported the tactical withdrawal of Camp Bastion-Leatherneck, closing out U.S. combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
In August 2015, Captain Bagley reported to Expeditionary Warfare School. Upon graduation, he reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One, where he served as a CH-53E Instructor Pilot.
In June 2018, Major Bagley reported to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One, where he served as a CH-53 Operational Test Director. He then joined Marine Aircraft Group 29, where he served as the Future Operations Officer. In September of 2019, he checked in to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, where he served as the Director of Safety and Standardization and Operations Officer.
In April 2021, Major Bagley reported to Headquarters Marine Corps Aviation, Air Warfare Systems Assault Support, as the Heavy Lift Platform Life Cycle Manager.
In July 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Bagley reported to Marine Aircraft Group 29 to serve as the Personnel Support Detachment Commanding Officer before assuming command of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461.
Lieutenant Colonel Bagley's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
