Command Biography

MACS-2 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel James J. Wuestman

Lieutenant Colonel Wuestman enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2000. Upon completing recruit training, he trained as an Air Control Electronic Operator at 29 Palms, California, before reporting to Marine Air Control Squadron 2 (MACS-2) at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. While stationed there, he deployed to CENTCOM in support of OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH in 2002. He was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in December 2002 and deployed to Kuwait and Iraq for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM in February 2003. In May 2004, he deployed to Afghanistan for OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and was promoted to Sergeant in July 2004.

In March 2005, he returned to 29 Palms for the Tactical Air Defense Controllers Course, subsequently returning to MACS-2 for another deployment to Iraq for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. In October 2006, he was selected for Staff Sergeant and the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. He reported to NROTC at Norwich University in November 2007, earning a B.A. in History. Promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in March 2011 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 2011. Following graduation from The Basic School in January 2012, he reported to MACS-2 as an Air Defense Control Officer.

In June 2013, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and deployed to Afghanistan supporting OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as a Senior Air Director. In September 2014, he graduated from the Weapons and Tactics Instructors Course at MAWTS-1 in Yuma, Arizona. He then served as the MACS-2 Weapons and Tactics Training Program Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. In July 2015 he was promoted to Captain and joined the MAWTS-1 instructor staff, serving as the Opposition Force Coordinator and Tactical Air Operations Center (TAOC) Division Head. 

In April 2018, he reported to the U.S. Naval Academy as a LEAD Instructor and Company Officer, earning a Master's in Leadership, Education and Development from The George Washington University. Promoted to Major in April 2020, he served as the 2nd Battalion Executive Officer and completed the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School and Command and Staff College distance programs. In July 2021, he attended the resident Command and Staff College at Marine Corps University, earning a Master of Military Studies.

In June 2022 he report to MACG-28 to serve as Assistant Operations Officer before returning to MACS-2 as Operations Officer and later Executive Officer in July 2023. In June 2025, he reported to MACG-28, where he currently serves as the Operations Officer. 

Lieutenant Colonel Wuestman's personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, gold star in lieu of third award and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, gold star in lieu of second award.
