Major Jeremy Haney

Major Jeremy “PYT” Haney was born on 31 July 1989 in Cookeville, Tennessee. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, Fork Union, Virginia, in 2008 and received a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 2012, earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant. Second Lieutenant Haney then reported to The Basic School, graduating with Echo Company in January 2013. He subsequently attended Naval Flight School at MATSG-21, Pensacola, Florida, completing Primary Flight Training (VT-3), Intermediate Helicopter Training (HT-28), and Advanced Multi-engine Training (VT-35). First Lieutenant Haney was designated a Naval Aviator on 29 May 2015, following his winging he attended Survive, Evade, Rescue, and Escape (SERE) school and graduated in June 2015.

First Lieutenant Haney reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 (VMMT-204) at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, in July 2015, to begin training in the MV-22B Osprey. He completed training in October 2015 and was designated a Tiltrotor Second Pilot (T2P). He then reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (VMM-263) in November 2015, serving as the Assistant S-1 Officer. He deployed with the Air Combat Element of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Crisis Response Africa (SPMAGTF-CR AF) 16.1 from January to August 2016. Returning from deployment, Captain Haney served as a Daily Schedule Writer and Current Operations Officer. He deployed again with SPMAGTF-CR AF 18.1 from June to August 2018 as the Flightline Officer. Captain Haney returned early from this deployment to attend Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI) 1-19 in August-September 2018 and subsequently served as the Pilot Training Officer (PTO) and Assistant Operations Officer at VMM-263.

In July 2020, Captain Haney reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1) in Yuma, Arizona, serving as an MV-22B instructor pilot. He held duties as the Assistant Academic Officer, International Military Student Officer, and Final Exercise (FINEX) Evolution Coordinator. As an instructor, he served as the Subject Matter Expert in Reduced Visibility Landings (RVLs), Tiltrotor Air-to-Air Refueling (TAAR), Communications, Air Delivered Ground Refueling (ADGR), and Airborne Command and Control (AC2). He completed his tour at MAWTS-1 in May 2023.

Major Haney joined VMM-365 in June 2023 to serve as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) Operations Officer for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). The squadron composed, completed pre-deployment training, and deployed in May 2024, participating in five bilateral training exercises with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allies and conducting eight training deployments throughout the Baltics and the Mediterranean. Following the successful completion of the deployment, Major Haney served as the Expeditionary Operations Training Group (EOTG) Aviation Evaluator for the 26th MEU Pre-Deployment Training Program (PTP), mentoring the MEU through Amphibious Ready Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise (ARGMEUEX) and Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) prior to their deployment.

In July 2025, Major Haney reported to VMM-266 to serve as the Executive Officer.

Major Haney has accumulated over 2,000 mishap-free flight hours and holds designations as an Assault Flight Lead, Air Mission Commander, Night Systems Instructor, Defensive Combat Maneuvers Instructor, and Weapons and Tactics Instructor. He is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Program and the Command and Staff Distance Education Program.

Major Haney’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Gold Star in lieu of second award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Gold Star in lieu of second award).
