Sergeant Major Ackroyd enlisted in the Marine Corps in December 2003. February 2004, he graduated from recruit training as a Private First Class at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina. He completed his follow on training, Marine Combat Training, at New River Air Station , North Carolina. Upon completion he reported to Logistics Operations School for Motor Transportation Organizational Course at Camp Johnson, NC in March 2004.
In August 2004, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to 2d Battalion, 10th Marines, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on September 1, 2004. While there he completed two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On September 1, 2005 he was promoted to Corporal. Corporal Ackroyd was promoted to Sergeant on June 1, 2007.
In April 2008, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to Inspector-Instructor Staff Bridge Company Bravo 6th Engineer Support Battalion in Folsom, PA. During his time there he had a wide range of responsibilities. He served as the Motor Transportation (MT), Heavy Equipment (HE) and Utilities (UT) Maintenance Chief and an armory custodian. He additionally served as the Toys for Tots Coordinator. Sergeant Major Ackroyd attended the MT Licensing Examiners School and Logistics Vehicle System (LVS) Maintenance School. He was also assigned to conduct Military Funeral Honors and Color Guard.
In July, 2011 Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to Headquarters Battery 10th Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC. While here he served as the Motor Transportation Maintenance Chief. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant February 1, 2012. In July, 2014, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to Basic Recruiter School in San Diego, CA. Upon graduation he received orders to Recruiting Station (RS) Buffalo, NY. He served as a canvasing recruiter for a year, when he was selected to become a Military Entrance processing Station (MEPS) Liaison. He attended the MEPS Liaison course at Parris Island, SC and upon completion reported to MEPS Syracuse in September 2015. On July 1, 2017 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.
In October 2017, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment (CLR) 15, Camp Pendleton, CA. He was assigned to Motor Transportation Maintenance (MTM) Company. He received orders to deploy with Marine Rotational Force-Darwin (MRF-D) to Darwin, Australia in November, 2017. Upon his return he assumed the duty of the Company Gunnery Sergeant for MTM Company. In July 2019 he was assigned as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant. He was selected to First Sergeant in November 2020. In June 2021, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Air Group 12, Iwakuni Japan. He served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Company A.
In September 2023, Sergeant Major Ackroyd reported 2d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, MCAS Cherry Point, NC. He served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Battery B. He was selected for Sergeant Major and received orders to VMUT-2.
Sergeant Major Ackroyd personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award. He has an Associates Degree in Applied Science.
