Command Biography

MALS-31 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Christopher J. Alfaro

Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Alfaro is a native of New Jersey. He graduated from Texas A&M University and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in August 2008.

Following graduation from The Basic School and Aircraft Maintenance Officer Indoctrination, Second Lieutenant Alfaro reported to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268 (HMM-268) at Camp Pendleton, California. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in August 2010.

While assigned to the “Red Dragons,” First Lieutenant Alfaro served as the Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer. During HMM-268’s deployment in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, he served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer for Detachment Alpha aboard the USS New Orleans (LPD-18). Throughout this deployment, he participated in Theater Security Cooperation Exercises in Cambodia, Kuwait, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while continuing disaggregated operations across the 7th Fleet. Upon returning, he reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39) as the 400 Division Power Plants Officer. He was promoted to Captain in October 2012.

In June 2013, Captain Alfaro reported to the Installations & Logistics Department at Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C., where he served as the MAGTF Logistics Integration (MLI) Officer for the Logistics Vision & Strategy Branch (LPV-1). In this role, he led multiple initiatives to improve integration between ground and aviation logistics in support of deployed units.

In July 2016, Captain Alfaro reported to MALS-16 at MCAS Miramar, California, where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer. From April 2018 to January 2019, he deployed with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command 18.2, serving as the Aviation Logistics Department Planner. He supported two MALS detachments and flight operations for twelve MV-22B, twelve F/A-18A, and three KC-130J aircraft. He was promoted to Major in September 2018.

In June 2019, Major Alfaro attended the Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduation, he reported to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501), where he served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the WARLORDS. In June 2023, he reported to the Manpower Management Performance Branch (MMPB), Deputy Commandant for Manpower & Reserve Affairs, to serve as the Head of Records and Performance Section. He was frocked to Lieutenant Colonel in March 2024.

Lieutenant Colonel Alfaro’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and designation as a Naval Aircrewman for the CH-46E helicopter.
