Command Biography

MASS-1 Executive Officer
Major Matthew K. Sweeney

Major Matthew Sweeney is a native of Floral Park, New York. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

Following completion of The Basic School, Second Lieutenant Sweeney transitioned from an Air Contract to a Ground Contract and was redesignated as an Air Support Control Officer. He attended the Air Support Control Officer Course in July 2017 and subsequently received orders to Marine Air Support Squadron 1 (MASS-1) aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.

At MASS-1, First Lieutenant Sweeney served as First Platoon Commander, Air Support Company, and participated in numerous exercises including Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI) 2-18, Burmese Chase, and Trident Juncture 18 in Norway as part of the amphibious task force.

Following his platoon command tour, First Lieutenant Sweeney deployed as an Individual Augment to Kabul, Afghanistan, from July 2019 to February 2020. During this deployment, he served as the Operations Officer for the Security Assistance Office (SAO), Combined Security Transition Command–Afghanistan (CSTC-A). Upon returning from deployment, Captain Sweeney assumed duties as Headquarters and Support Company Commander at MASS-1 from February 2020 to June 2020.

In June 2020, Captain Sweeney transferred to Monterey, California, where he attended the Naval Postgraduate School as a graduate student in Computer Science. He graduated in October 2022 with a Master of Science in Computer Science. During this period, he also completed Expeditionary Warfare School and Joint Professional Military Education Phase I through the Naval War College, both with distinction.

In October 2022, Captain Sweeney reported to Annapolis, Maryland, where he served as a Computer Science Instructor at the United States Naval Academy as part of his NPS utilization tour.

In June 2025, Major Sweeney returned to MASS-1 and assumed duties as Tactical Air Command Center (TACC) Company Commander. In this role, he served as the MASS-1 Detachment Officer in Charge for Service Level Training Exercise (SLTE) 1-26. In April 2026, he assumed duties as the Executive Officer of MASS-1.

Major Sweeney’s personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
