Command Biography

HMLA-167 Executive Officer
Major Matthew D. Nole

Major Nole was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 2011 after graduating from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Film Studies.  Upon graduation from The Basic School in September of 2012, Major Nole was assigned to Naval Aviation Flight Training in Pensacola, FL and was designated a Naval Aviator in July of 2014.  Major Nole completed the FRS syllabus in December of 2014 receiving the designation of AH-1W Pilot.

In January of 2015, Major Nole reported for duty at HMLA 167 “Warriors” at Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC.  Major Nole deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of UDP 16.1 from October of 2015 to May of 2016, and participated in (3) Integrated Training Exercises in Twentynine Palms, CA.  Major Nole attended the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course in Yuma, AZ in the fall of 2017. In August of 2018, Major Nole completed the HMLAT-303 series conversion syllabus for AH-1Z “Viper” at Camp Pendleton California. As a company grade officer, Major Nole served as the S-6 OIC, AH-1 Flight Officer, Pilot Training Officer and Assistant Operations Officer.

Major Nole reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One in July of 2020 for duty as an AH-1Z Instructor Pilot. While at MAWTS-1, Major Nole served as the Aviation Survivability Equipment (ASE) SME, the Rotary Wing Offensive Air Support SME in the ADT&E Department and the AH-1 Division Head. 

Major Nole then attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, graduating in June of 2024 with a Master’s in Military Studies. 

Major Nole returned to HMLA-167 “Warriors” in July of 2024, serving at the Operations Officer until assuming his current post as Executive Officer in June 2025. 

Major Nole’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with one gold star.
