VMM-261 Executive Officer
Major Karl L. Velasco-Lehmann

Captain Velasco-Lehmann is a native of Fort Worth, TX. He Graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science in Geographic Information Science with a specialty in Remote Sensing.

After accepting his commission, Captain Velasco-Lehmann reported to The Basic School in Quantico, VA and graduated in March of 2016. Completion of Primary (VT-2) and Advanced Flight School (HT-18) brought orders to Helicopter Marine Light Attack Training Squadron (HMLAT) 303 and follow on orders to HMLA-367 in Kaneohe Bay, HI.

During his first 10 months in the squadron, Captain Velasco-Lehmann worked in Operations. With only 6 months in the squadron, Captain Velasco-Lehmann earned a position as the sole weekly writer for 367 while the squadron executed simultaneous detachments to Marine Rotation Forces - Darwin (MRF-D) and South Korea.

In the summer of 2019, Captain Velasco-Lehmann became the UH-1Y Naval Air Training and Operations Standardization (NATOPS) officer in the Department of Safety and Standardization (DOSS). He executed this billet during HMLA-367's deployment to Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 5-19 and Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) Blue Air.

Upon returning from California, Captain Velasco-Lehmann continued in his role as UH-1Y NATOPS officer while simultaneously preparing to take over the Airframes OIC role for the HMLA-367 detachment in support of MRF-D 2020. After the deployment was canceled in April 2020 due to the Coronavirus, Captain Velasco-Lehmann then moved to the Tactics Department where he was in charge of developing and standardizing the squadron's Marine Air-Ground Tablet (MAGTAB) Program. During this time, he received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his work in leading a MAG-24 Digital Interoperability Demonstration for the Secretary of Defense in September of 2020.

In the Spring of 2021, Captain Velasco-Lehmann deployed to Darwin Australia as part of the H-1 Detachment to VMM-363 (Rein) as the Mission Planning Systems officer, supervising the integration of MAGTAB and JMPS across all three TMS resident in the Squadron, as well as planning and integration with partner Australian Defence Forces. As a pilot, he gaind Section Lead, Basic Instructor Pilot, Terf-Instructor pilot designations and qualifications on the Deployment, and executed over 100 mishap free flight hours. During the deployment, Captain Velasco-Lehmann was selected to transition to the MV-22 on the FY22 Transition / Conversion Board.

Capt Velasco-Lehmann reported to VMMT-204 in the fall of 2021 immediately after returning from deployment in Australia. During this time he completed his EWS curriculum and was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate. He reported to VMM-261 in the Summer of 2022 and worked in the S-4 while he awaited a class date for the United States Navy School of Aviation Safety and a NAAMI waiver for his return to flying status. Capt Velasco-Lehmann completed the ASO course in the same month he received his medical waiver and returned to MCAS New River where he transitioned into the billet of Assistant Aviation Maintenance Officer while completing the FRS syllabus at VMMT-204 in January of 2023. Capt Velasco-Lehmann retained the billet of AAMO gaining a vast appreciation for and experience in V-22 maintenance and manpower management through two fleet wide grounding bulletins, a DFT to SLTE 23-1, and a combat deployment to Djibouti, Africa as a pilot in VMM-261 ACE CRAF 24.1. During this time, he flew 78 mishap free flight hours, 68 of those in Combat, gaining his Tiltrotor Aircraft Commander (TAC) designation and regaining his Basic Instructor Pilot and Functional Check Pilot Qualifications in the MV-22B aircraft.

Capt Velasco-Lehmann promoted to the rank of Major in August of 2024, and culminated his tenure as AMO in May 2025 after the successful completion of a CNAF inspection with a final score of 90%. Maj Velasco-Lehmann continued to progress in the MV-22 earning LAT-I, RVLI, AARI, Division Lead, and Night Systems Instructor (NSI) certifications and designations. Maj Velasco-Lehmann currently serves as the Executive Officer of VMM-261.
