Command Biography

VMFA-533 Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Douglas R. Kansier

LtCol Kansier was commissioned in March 2009 and subsequently completed The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course aboard MCB Quantico.

Upon graduation from IOC, he received orders to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines aboard MCB Hawaii.

While in V33 he served as H&S Company Executive Officer, Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon Commander, and Kilo Company Executive Officer. He deployed twice to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

In fall 2012 LtCol Kansier reported for duty aboard Marine Barracks, Washington D.C. While at ‘8th and I’ he served as project officer at the former Marine Corps Institute and participated in numerous ceremonial events in the National Capital Region, including the Presidential inauguration and the Sunset and Evening Parades. While stationed at MBW LtCol Kansier was selected on the Field Accession Board to begin training towards a Naval Aviator designation.

LtCol Kansier completed flight training in Pensacola, FL and Kingsville, TX, earning his wings in June 2016. Upon completion of the replacement pilot syllabus at VMFAT-101, LtCol Kansier was designated a qualified F/A-18 pilot and reported to VMFA-115 at MCAS Beaufort.

LtCol Kansier served as NATOPS Officer and Admin Officer during two years in the ‘Silver Eagles.’ He deployed with the squadron to Bahrain in 2018 flying the F/A-18A++ in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. Following return from deployment LtCol Kansier was selected for conversion to the F-35B Lightning II.

Following conversion training at VMFAT-501 LtCol Kansier received orders to Marine Aircraft Group 12 and re-located to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan in July 2020. He was part of the initial cadre that stood up the re-designated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 242 in October 2020 and served as Operations Officer and Executive Officer during three years in the ‘Bats.’

LtCol Kansier then received orders to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 at MCAS Yuma. While at VMX-1 LtCol Kansier served as the Tactics and Integration Department Head and F-35 Department Head and completed the MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. He participated in numerous test flag exercises, evaluating near-term and future F-35 weapons and capabilities.

In summer 2024 LtCol Kansier was selected to command the ‘Hawks’ of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 533 and reported to Marine Aircraft Group 31 in the summer of 2025. He took command of the squadron on 21 November 2025.
