VMM-162 Command Senior Enlisted Leader
Sergeant Major Daniel Gonzalez

Sergeant Major Gonzalez is a native of Lancaster, CA. He graduated from Hart High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 2006. After graduating from recruit training at MCRD San Diego, CA, Private Gonzalez proceeded to Camp Pendleton, CA to attend the School of Infantry (West), where he earned the military occupational specialty of Infantry Basic Rifleman (0311). Upon completion of training at Camp Pendleton, Private Gonzalez received orders to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Twentynine Palms, CA.

Upon reporting to Lima Company, he was assigned to 1st Platoon where he served from 2006 until 2009. Private First Class Gonzalez deployed to Ar Ramadi, Iraq in April 2007 and to Hit, Iraq in August 2008 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM where he held the billets of Rifleman, Fire Team Leader, and Squad Leader. 

In September 2009, Corporal Gonzalez was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, where he served as a range block coach until April 2010 when he separated from active duty to further his education and returned to Los Angeles, CA. In June 2011, Sergeant Gonzalez joined the Select Marine Corps Reserve and was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines, while awaiting a return to active duty and served as Platoon Guide and Platoon Sergeant.

In August 2012, Sergeant Gonzalez was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve in New Orleans, LA, as a Training Clerk to assist with establishing a training section. The following April, he deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, as an Individual Augment with Marine Forces Central Command - Afghanistan (MCE-A) to lead a Personal Security Detachment team in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. After being promoted to Staff Sergeant in September 2014, he was assigned to Marine Forces Europe and Africa in Stuttgart, Germany, to serve as a Watch Chief.  He then transitioned to the Inspector Instructor Staff for Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines, in October 2015, where he served as the Training Chief.

In February 2016, Staff Sergeant Gonzalez was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, where he served as a Platoon Sergeant and deployed in support of Unit Deployment Program (UDP) to Okinawa, Japan. Upon return from UDP, Staff Sergeant Gonzalez was assigned to Weapons Company in March 2017 to serve as a Section Leader for the 81mm Mortar Platoon. Staff Sergeant Gonzalez was selected to Gunnery Sergeant and moved to Headquarters and Service Company to serve as the Company Gunnery Sergeant in July 2018, where he deployed in support of UDP to Okinawa, Japan. In September 2018, Gunnery Sergeant Gonzalez was moved to India Company to serve as the Company Gunnery Sergeant and deployed the company to Japan and South Korea. While assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, Gunnery Sergeant Gonzalez graduated from Infantry Unit Leaders Course, Advanced Mortarman Course, Martial Arts Instructor Course, Martial Arts Instructor Trainer Course, and Career Course.

In April 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Gonzalez was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as the S-3 Training Chief. In December 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Gonzalez assumed the billet of Company First Sergeant for Combat Service Support Company. In March 2021, Gunnery Sergeant Gonzalez was moved to assume the billet of Company First Sergeant for Headquarters Company.

In January 2022, First Sergeant Gonzalez assumed the duties as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader of Golf Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry (West), Camp Pendleton, CA.

In July 2024, First Sergeant Gonzalez was selected to attend the Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 75 at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX. Upon graduation in July 2025, First Sergeant Gonzalez was assigned to Copperhead Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines to serves as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader.

In June 2026, Sergeant Major Gonzalez was promoted and reported to VMM-162 where he currently serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Sergeant Major Gonzalez's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of fourth award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
