Sergeant Major William G. Morris III enlisted in the Marine Corps on 10 March 2003 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. Upon graduation from recruit training and Marine Combat Training, he reported to Aviation Operations School in Meridian, MS.
In October 2003, Private First Class Morris reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, Camp Smith, HI. During his tour, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and attended training at Naval Station Coronado, CA, where he became Command and Control Personal Computer qualified. After earning AMOS 8711, Lance Corporal Morris assumed the billet of Common Operational Picture Operator for MARFORPAC G-3. In 2005, he was promoted to Corporal and quickly became a subject matter expert while attached to Combined Marine Forces Command, Republic of Korea, during numerous training exercises, including Ulchi Focus Lens and Reception, Staging, Onward Movement, and Integration (RSOI). Additionally, while stationed at Headquarters and Service Battalion, Corporal Morris served as a dedicated member of the unit Color Guard, participating in more than 20 ceremonies.
In October 2007, Corporal Morris reported to Marine Transport Squadron Detachment, Andrews Air Force Base, MD. During this time, he transitioned from COC-related tasks to becoming the lead scheduler and subsequently the Operations Chief. He was promoted to Sergeant in October 2007 and deployed to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Upon returning, Sergeant Morris implemented and supervised his unit’s transition to M-SHARP and completed Sergeants Course 1-09 at Quantico, VA.
In January 2010, Sergeant Morris reported to Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 4, Cherry Point, NC. In April 2011, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and deployed to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In April 2012, Staff Sergeant Morris reported as a faculty advisor for the Sergeants Course at the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy in Okinawa, Japan. He earned his Master Faculty Advisor certification in July 2014 and was recognized as Faculty Advisor of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2014. He played a key role in the creation and implementation of the four-week Sergeants Course across the Marine Corps while serving as the SNCOIC of the course.
In July 2015, Staff Sergeant Morris reported to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303, Camp Pendleton, CA, where he served as the Operations Chief. While assigned to the H-1 training squadron, he earned his Martial Arts Instructor certification and attended the initial Force Fitness Instructor Course, becoming the first Force Fitness Instructor in Marine Aircraft Group 39.
In July 2017, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and served as the Operations Chief for Marine Aircraft Group 39. During this time, he also served as the SNCOIC for the MAG-39 Corporals Course, as well as the lead Force Fitness Instructor and lead Martial Arts Instructor for the Group. Gunnery Sergeant Morris also attended the Inter-Service Non-Lethal Individual Weapons Instructor Course prior to departing for Marine Security Guard School.
Gunnery Sergeant Morris attended Class 2-19 at Marine Security Guard School, graduating with the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Award. His first post was at the American Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by a second post at the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region, China.
On 22 May 2021, he was promoted to First Sergeant and reported to MCESG Region 7 (North and West Africa) as the Senior Enlisted Advisor. After successfully completing his tour in Frankfurt, Germany, he transferred to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC, in August 2023, where he served as the senior enlisted advisor for Headquarters Battery. In January 2025, he transferred to Battery B, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines.
In January 2026, Sergeant Major Morris was promoted to his current rank and transferred to Marine Air Support Squadron 1 (MASS-1), Cherry Point, NC, where he currently serves as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one silver star, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with one silver star and one bronze star.
