Command Biography

VMM-266 Executive Officer
Major Daniel A. Urban

Major Urban spent much of his youth living overseas, including Guam, Shanghai, China, and Alice Springs, Australia before completing high school in Kentucky. He graduated from California Baptist University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. In October 2017, he reported to The Basic School. Following completion, he underwent flight training with VT-27, HT-8, and VT-35, and was designated a Naval Aviator in March 2020. He then reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 (VMMT-204) for MV-22B fleet replacement training.

In November 2020, Major Urban reported to his first fleet assignment with Marine Aircraft Group 36 in Okinawa, Japan, where he was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (VMM-262). During his time with the squadron, he served as a Daily Schedule Writer, the Future Operations Officer, as the S-6 Officer, and as the Unit Readiness Coordinator (URC). He deployed multiple times with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) across the INDOPACOM area of responsibility. Serving as the lead aviation low-altitude tactics instructor for the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), he culminated this bilateral training by leading the first-ever joint division flight between U.S. and Japanese MV-22s. Additionally, Major Urban assisted in the planning and execution of major bilateral exercises, including Balikatan, Kamandag, Iron Fist, and Resolute Dragon, alongside partner forces from the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.

Following his tour in Okinawa, Major Urban reported back to VMMT-204 in August 2024. While serving as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor, he held multiple billets including Current Operations Officer, Student Control Officer, Pilot Training Officer, and Flight Line Officer in Charge (OIC). He trained U.S. Marine, Air Force, and Army aviators while earning qualifications as a Night Systems Instructor, Crew Resource Management Instructor, and Standardization Instructor. Furthermore, Major Urban served as the lead planner from VMMT-204 for the International Naval Review, which included coordinating a movement for the Vice President of the United States.

In July 2026, Major Urban checked into Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 (VMM-266), where he currently serves as the Executive Officer.

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star.
