Building 159’s parking lot shines brightly now due to Voluntary Protection Program initiatives that took place aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., in January 2017. “It is critical to preserve the workforce to the fullest extent possible; everyone deserves to go home in the same shape or better than they came in to work,” said Cmdr. Amy Varney, the installation safety manager aboard the air station. In VPP, management, labor, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration work cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses through a system focused on: hazard prevention and control; worksite analysis; training; and management commitment and worker involvement. MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C.—Lance Cpl. Adam Slama says goodbye to his wife before leaving for a deployment from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., March 29, 2017. The mission of Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, during the deployment will be to conduct airborne electronic warfare in support of operations. This includes the EA-6B Prowler’s unique ability to suppress enemy radar and surface-to-air missiles utilizing electronic jamming and high-speed anti-radiation missiles, as well as collect tactical intelligence in a passive electronic support role. A group of UH-1Y Venoms and AH-1W Super Cobras land to conduct cold weather operations aboard Fort Drum, N.Y., March 8, 2017. The training, which began March 8, involves Marines with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, Marine Aircraft Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, along with other various units across the Department of Defense. The lessons learned from this training will serve as guidance that can be applied to operations all around the world, and make HMLA-269 a more valuable asset to the Air Combat Element of the Marine Corps. Cpl. Cade Mierstice stands among aircraft on a flight line during cold weather training aboard Ft. Drum, N.Y., Mar. 11, 2017. After being an avid competitor in wrestling, he chose to join the Marine Corps because he did not want to settle for anything short of the finest. “We’re the best,” said Mierstice. “It’s just how we are. I was a state championship wrestler before I got in, and I always wanted to be the best at everything I did.” Mierstice is an aviation ordnance technician with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269.
