Winging it with the AWC

1 Sep 2019 | Cpl. Paige Stade 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing

Recently, the Assistant Wing Commander Colonel Frank Latt, visited the Marines of Marine Aviation Logistic Squadron 14 (MALS), to film another episode of his popular online series, “Winging It with the AWC”. The intent of the series is to take viewers behind the scenes of the everyday working Marine, and to show the contributions they give to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW). This week’s episode focuses on “Nondestructive Inspection” (NDI), a type of maintenance that is performed to ensure the safety and serviceability of 2nd MAW aircraft.

The purpose of NDI is to search out and repair any defects that come from the normal wear and tear of airframe metal, which can arise during the lifetime of an aircraft. Col. Latt assisted NDI technicians, Sgt. Vincent Molinare and Cpl. Adam Manias, as they explained and guided him through each inspection. “It was really something special to see the AWC come down to the shop, to see what we do,” said Sgt. Molinare, describing his experience with the Col. Latt. “I think it shows a lot about our command; showing off what the everyday Marine does, day-in and day-out, to make our Marine Corps successful.”

As a 30 plus year veteran of the Marine Corps, it is no secret the kind of experience and responsibility Col. Latt brings, but even so, Col. Latt holds nothing back as he humbly becomes a student in order to learn from the subject matter experts he visits in each episode. “I am so impressed with the attention to detail, the technology, and the artistic side of what you do and how much of an impact it really is,” said Col. Latt.

Col. Latt has been filming the series for several months now and has recently completed its 4th episode with many more in store.  Please follow the 2ndMAW’s official Facebook page for similar content and more Winging it with the AWC!
